T5 Camper and Motorhomes
Volkswagen camper van enthusiasts, Californian usually denotes a classic rear-engined, air-cooled Kombi which has received lowered suspension, sporting modifications and a stripped-down exterior style. Volkswagen is, however, to use the name California on a new version of the modern-day Caravelle.
This modern Microbus is a fully factory-built and Volkswagen-fitted camper van with two sleeping areas, one in the main body of the van and the other, accessible via a hydraulic raising mechanism, in the roof.
The California also comes with fold-out chairs and table, plus a 42-litre fridge, a 30-litre fresh water container with pump, twin-gas stove, a radio/cassette/CD player, remote-controlled auxiliary heaters, multiple storage cupboards with drawers and double-glazed windows.
It will be offered with the five-cylinder 2.5-litre TDI PD diesel engine in either 130bhp or 174bhp form, with equipment including ABS, traction control and stability control. Options include Europe-wide sat nav, Climatronic air conditioning, a removable tow bar, a side-mounted awning and 4Motion four-wheel drive.

Almost as many conversion companies are now specialising in converting the T5 Transporter as were previously involved with the T4, T3 and T2 models before them, with some of the biggest names still in the business the only real change being the base model that the motorhomes are built upon.
